Coming to the UK in 2013, the Dacia brand is still relatively new. It offered the UK the least expensive new car - the Sandero. It also offered a Sandero that had been enhanced slightly, with the crossover-like Sandero Stepway.

Totally redesigned from the ground up, the All-New Sandero Stepway features rugged SUV styling with a raised driving position. New LED Y-shaped headlights, roof bars, hill start assist, air conditioning. The Dacia Sandero Stepway has been built by the Romanian manufacturer owned by Renault since 2007. Dacia Sandero in the standard hatchback version is 4099mm long. The car has a trunk capacity of 328 liters. Dacia Sandero has 15-inch wheels. Among the variants, the Dacia Sandero Stepway crossover SUV has a higher price tag.

The Sandero Stepway is boosted over the regular Sandero by featuring raised ride height, and chunkier crossover-like looks. It has the potential to be a good used car.

But what does the Sandero Stepway offer?

  • Hugely affordable
  • Chunky, fashionable looks

Discover more about the Sandero Stepway, and why it's a good used car possibility below.

Petrol engines available in the Sandero Stepway include a 1.0-litre with 71bhp or 73bhp. Although we would probably advise going for the smaller turbocharged 0.9-litre with 88bhp. It's a lot nippier taking, 10.7 seconds to hit 62mph from a standstill, rather than the 16.2 seconds of the 1.0-litre.

A diesel 1.5-litre with 88bhp or 93bhp is also available, with between 59-72mpg possible, as opposed to the petrol engines 44mpg average. The most powerful is a Bi-fuel 98bhp 1.0litre petrol/LPG engine. Buyers of this model will benefit from far cheaper LPG fuel prices.

The Sandero Stepway offers a compliant drive, but the car behaves better when driven gently, rather than spirited. The higher ride height will also benefit slightly rougher terrain, but as it doesn't offer four-wheel drive, it's not advised for off-roading.

As the Sandero Stepway is almost identical to the regular Sandero, the boot space remains the same. This is a fairly decent 320 litres, which increases to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded.

The car still retains its useful hatchback foundations, with 5-doors as standard, a hatch boot and ample space in the cabin.

To run, as is the Dacia mantra of value, economy is good with engines returning on average between 44 and 72mpg, depending on model chosen. Servicing and maintenance is also attractive, and can be looked into via our dedicated servicing page, or by contacting your local Evans Halshaw Renault dealer, as Dacia is part of the Renault group.

The interior of the Dacia Sandero Stepway is not one for impressing, instead it offers the basics, but in a simplistic and no-nonsense way. Due to being part of the Renault family, some interior style and parts are very old-generation Renault, but this means interiors are neat, unfussy and clean.

Higher-spec models receive a simplistic infotainment system, which does lift the cabin in terms of style and interest. You can also take advantage of rear parking sensors and cruise control in higher-spec models too, whilst 'Techroad' edition models go further, offering a parking camera and unique upholstery.

Sandero Stepway models feature basic safety features such as driver and front passenger airbags, along with side airbags, electronic stability control, traction control and ABS.

Dacia

Being a Dacia, a used Sandero Stepway offers very good value. Of course, it's not the most technically advanced car, and lacks the very latest cutting-edge infotainment, safety and style more mainstream manufacturers feature in their cars.

But if you like the idea of crossover-like style, with hatchback practicality for a cheap price, then the Sandero Stepway is well worth a look.

Competitors such as the Nissan Juke and Skoda Yeti certainly have more appeal, along with the tech and safety enhancements mentioned previously, but they will also cost more when buying used.
