VeraCrypt

Free disk encryption software based on TrueCrypt

Guidance Document - VeraCrypt Installation and Use VeraCrypt Tutorial Outline. Installing the Software; Setting up an encrypted container; Usage; Installing the Software. The software is free and can be installed by anyone with administrative privileges to the computer on which it is being installed. Veracrypt appears to have the ability to specify the noattach option but i have not been able to use it without a drive letter, which is what the noattach is supposed to avoid. With the UI, a drive must be selected for Noattach to work.

VeraCrypt is software for establishing and maintaining anon-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device).On-the-fly encryption means that data is automatically encryptedright before it is saved and decrypted right after it is loaded, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encryptedvolume can be read (decrypted) without using the correctpassword/keyfile(s) or correct encryption keys. Entire file systemis encrypted (e.g., file names, folder names, contents of everyfile, free space, meta data, etc).It is based on original TrueCrypt 7.1a with security enhancementsand modifications.

The VeraCrypt Volume Creation Wizard allows you to create an encrypted file container on the flash drive which sits along with other unencrypted files, or you can choose to encrypt the entire. Just make sure you use a secure password ( 30 chars, possibly random) and dont fiddle around with algorithm settings (but I'm not even sure veracrypt will let you). Edit: Since @jondoe666 is pretty right in his criticism of my post this shall make it a little more complete: Yes. For most of the things I wanted to do, AES was pretty sufficient. VeraCrypt encrypts every sector with a different key. Those different keys are derived from one master key. The master key itself is stored in the volume, protected by the volume password (and/or key files).
